Dynamical consequences of CDM merger trees

چکیده

Within the standard structure formation scenario, galaxies form as the result of an extended merger process. The first structures to form are small bound objects occurring at z ∼ 10, which then merge repeatedly to form increasingly larger objects. In this context, elliptical galaxies are generally seen as the result of a major merger of spiral systems. Through extensive SPH simulations of merging spirals, we have explored these processes with the aim of quantifying their relaxation times. This is important, as it sets a minimum time interval between the onset of a merger, and the appearance of an elliptical galaxy. We then compare this constraint with predictions of the hierarchical scenario, computed through Press-Schechter merger trees. We find evidence for small elliptical systems which appear not to have been formed by a recent merger process.

Dynamical masses and non-homology of massive elliptical galaxies grown by dry mergers

We study whether dry merger-driven size growth of massive elliptical galaxies depends on their initial structural concentration, and analyse the validity of the homology hypothesis for virial mass determination in massive ellipticals grown by dry mergers. High-resolution simulations of a few realistic merger trees, starting with compact progenitors of different structural concentrations (Sérsic...

Substructure in Cdm Halos and the Heating of Stellar Disks

Numerical simulations have revealed the presence of long-lived substructure in Cold Dark Matter (CDM) halos. These surviving cores of past merger and accretion events vastly outnumber the known satellites of the Milky Way. This finding has prompted suggestions that substructure in cold dark matter (CDM) halos may be incompatible with observation and in conflict with the presence of thin, dynami...

A Dynamical Miss: A Study of the Discrepancy Between Optical and Infrared Kinematics in Mergers

Recently, controversy has erupted over whether gas-rich spiralspiral mergers are capable of forming m∗ ellipticals. Measurements of σ◦ from the 2.29μm CO band-head for local LIRG/ULIRGs, suggest they are not. IRbright mergers are often cited as the best candidates for forming massive ellipticals, so the recent observations have raised doubts about both the Toomre Merger Hypothesis and the funda...

The Halo Merger Rate in the Millennium Simulation and Implications for Observed Galaxy Merger Fractions

We have developed a new method to extract halo merger rates from the Millennium Simulation. First, by removing superfluous mergers that are artifacts of the standard Friends-Of-Friends (FOF) halo identification algorithm, we find a lower merger rate compared to previous work. The reductions are more significant at lower redshifts and lower halo masses, and especially for minor mergers. Our new ...

The Type of Audit Firms Mergers in Iran: Formal or Real

Although increased mergers of audit firms in the Iranian audit market has attracted the attention of profession, regulatory bodies and researchers, little evidence is available on the motivations, barriers, processes, types, consequences and reasons for failures of audit firm’s mergers. Therefore, the present study is an attempt to open the black box of mergers of audit firms through in-depth i...
